The former Gabriela mine is coming back to life with an ambitious plan to revitalize the entire post-mining landscape. In the spirit of circular economy principles, it will be given a new lease of life.

The aim of the project is to revitalize the area of the former Gabriela mine, where a new visitor and cultural center will be established, becoming the gateway to the entire landscape. The Pohopark area extends from the leaning church (Church of St. Peter of Alcantara) to the former Gabriela mine, covering a total area of 22 hectares.

The existing buildings will be revitalized, preserved, and repurposed for a new function. There will be an engaging exhibition about the lives and stories of miners, serving as a message to their descendants, who only know life underground and the mining of “black gold” from books. The site’s potential will also be utilized for regular cultural events and festivals within the former engine room, enriching the local cultural life of the region.

The only new building, which will be hidden underground, will be designed from recyclable materials and will meet a positive energy standard. The structure, with a glass façade facing a unique space between the historic buildings, will be designed with a focus on minimizing its carbon footprint. Inside, a new tourist and information center will provide year-round facilities for visitors. It will also offer educational programs and a vision of the modern future of the post-mining area, whose heart will beat in a new form. The purpose of the landscape has changed, but the goal remains the same – a place where hard work and healthy human values create a unique concept for stepping into a new beginning.
