health centre reconstruction
title:
Lesná health centre reconstruction
location:
Brno-Lesná
project:
2015-16
realisation:
2019
architects:
David Kudla
Petr Svoboda
Oldřich Fikejs
To deal with the reconstruction of a building is a demanding task, in which it is necessary to correctly find the good quality that is worth preserving (in this case the concept of the pavilions, the details of the façade, the material solutions in the interior) and the poor quality that needs to be changed to highlight the found quality (in this case the confusing layout). The building was built in a difficult political time, which tends to be a reason to reject everything associated with it. However, some of the authors of the time managed, despite the difficult circumstances, to create quality architecture. The building of the clinic is a good example, and having successfully convinced the client, the qualities found were preserved and the problematic parts were modified.
The realised reconstruction stage of the façade cladding respects and re-designs not only the well-thought-out continuity of the individual masses of the building, but especially the atypical articulation of the façade into a brick plinth, two white contrasting horizontal bands of plaster and a distinctive area of light glazing. In line with the original design, the skywalks are made with a different system of large-format glazing, which includes ventilation sashes ingeniously hidden in the grid of subtle columns of the façade system. The construction of the new glass pavilion will allow patients to understand the layout of the building and, together with the circular corridor, will eliminate the existing maze system. The new pavilion will include a central box with a full range of facilities for incoming people, including vertical communications. This area will become the focal point where visits to the clinic will begin and end.
