All we have dealt with here for years have been purely technical, transportation and construction issues. You could say that we didn't deal with architecture at all. Yet this realisation is described by many as a quality architectural achievement.
Even though it is a utilitarian and rational operational object for cleaning and maintaining the tram cars before they are put away until the next day, it is still a significant architectural object that presents inself with a 117-metre-long façade in the avenue, or strongly influences the face of the transport company in the public space.
The depot site itself is set in an interesting context. The entire Hlinky Street is lined on the south side with the halls of the Brno Exhibition Centre. On the north side, on the other hand, there is a block development with important buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s. The proposed building therefore continues the typical way of constructing on the south side of the street and creates a new industrial building that aims to react sensitively towards the public space (historically important excursion route of the Brno citizens).
The building is conceived in a passable prism, which is covered with a jagged façade that breaks up the noise from passing trains on the adjacent tram line. There is only one window placed within the mass, and it is located at the end of a working process, which produces a clean and treated tram. As the entire work process goes on late into the night, the window shines out into the darkened street, telling the story that while others have finished their workday, work is still happening here to get everything ready for the new day.
